The death toll from Brazil's new virus rose to 5,617 after 641 patients died within 24 hours, the Brazilian Ministry of Health said on Sunday.
Over the same period, the study
identified 17,459 new cases, bringing the total to 1,085,038 nationwide. The
rate of infection and death has made Brazil the second largest country in the
world after the United States. The state of southeast Brazil's most populous
city of South Paulo is at the center of the outbreak, with 219,185 cases and
12,588 deaths.
There were 96,133 deaths in Rio de
Janeiro, followed by 8,875 deaths and 92,855 in Ceara and 5,523 deaths.
